Tom Hood at the Queen’s Hotel is famous for his monster pies. And rightly so.
The main focus of his menu is the ‘wow’ factor generated by the unbelievably huge steak and ale pie served with cheesy leak mash and peas.
Sure, I’ve seen a few pies in my time and some significant efforts designed for two to share, but for one person this is something else.
Simply called ‘The Pie’, it doesn’t scrimp on the filling, using beef skirt and a mix of onions, celery, carrots, garlic, Tribute ale and seasoning.
The pastry is a full case which bucks the worrying trend of the puff pastry lid which disintegrate when touched.
This is great hearty food at a reasonable price. It’s the kind of dish you want to see served at an English pub.
