O is for Österreich

The landscape of ‘O’ options in London was particularly sparse, but in the spirit of the challenge we found a creative way forward. And Osterreich offered us the most memorable evening. We’ll remember this one for a long time.

The Tiroler Hut was established in 1967 and has been entertaining its clientele with a unique mix of Austrian food and entertainment for 50 years. The owner Joseph is at the heart of the action, yodelling, playing the accordion and saxophone, singing everything from Sinatra to Austrian classics. And of course the Tirolean Cow Bell Show (watch the video above). There was a fantastic atmosphere with the whole restaurant joining in.

We enjoyed a great selection of German beers, and while not cheap, a tasty menu of Austrian traditional fare. Starters included the excellent Mir ist alles Wurst (mixed fried sausage, £7.50), king prawns and Herring nach Art des Hauses (sweet and sour herring, £6.70).

Mains included Weinerschnitzel (£17.50) and the house recommended Gebratene Schweinshax’n (£16.90), a slow cooked roast knuckle of pork which melted off the bone and went extremely well with the red cabbage.
